Climbing Instructor Training Sponsored By Capitol Area Council B.S.A.
Climbing and Rappelling are among the few BSA activities which challenge and captivate the imagination of all ages. Austin is blessed with proximity to both man-made and natural climbing and rappelling resources. Dok’s Tower at LPSR is one of the finest climbing facilities in the US and the tallest in the state. Austin is in close proximity to Reimer’s Ranch, Enchanted Rock and various city parks where climbing is available. Capitol Area Council (CAC) Climbing Committee is offering the instructor course to satisfy the requirements of the BSA National Standards, Climb On Safely, and the Guide to Safe Scouting, while preparing individuals to supervise and facilitate these activities.
Training is delivered through three separate classes: Climbing Level II Tower, Climbing Level II Natural Area, and Level II COPE.
Climbing Level II – Artificial Surface/Tower Certification (Previously Level I)

Climbing Level II Tower Qualification provides the participant the basic instructor skills and foundation knowledge to manage a climbing/rappelling/high element event. This is a hands-on course is structured to provide training in; activity planning, belaying, equipment, climbing, risk management, rappelling, rescue techniques and site operations. The technical skill set is applicable to climbing, repelling or traversing any artificial surface or structure. It prepares the student to work on either a climbing wall, tower or the high course elements of COPE.
Climbing Level II – Natural Area Certification (Prerequisite: Tower Level II Training)

Climbing Level II Natural Area Qualification provides the participant the experience and knowledge to conduct and deliver Climbing and Rappelling events in a natural area environment. This course includes a weekend at Enchanted Rock to solidify and demonstrate natural anchoring techniques & systems. Once complete and assessed by a CAC Climbing Director, the holder of a natural areas endorsement can check out the council’s climbing gear and get their unit out on the rocks. Be advised the that to complete the LII certification a candidate must assist with 2 other natural areas events with a CAC training director.
COPE Level II Certification (Prerequisite: current certification for or concurrent enrollment in Tower Level II or Climbing Natural Area)

Doks Tower/LPSR & COPE/GLSR
COPE Level II Training program teaches skills of team development. COPE is composed of group initiative games, trust events, low-course events, and high-course events. Many activities involve a group challenge and help to develop individual skills and agility within a team-building framework. Participants climb, swing, balance, jump, rappel, and solve problems. This is a hands on training course. Actual scouts will be utilized in the training curriculum
Note: The CAC Climbing Committee is no longer supplying units with Instructors for climbing activities. Units wanting to use the tower or climbing gear should send at least one adult to training.
